Two very different plays by two exciting and talented East Asian writers—Boom by Jean Tay and wAve by Sung Rno—were directed by Yellow Earth’s Co-Artistic Directors, Philippe Cherbonnier and Jonathan Man, and brought together a fantastic cast that moved audiences to both laughter and tears.

Charmingly offbeat and very funny, Boom is a warm exploration of what makes a home, and why we become so attached to it once we believe we have made the perfect one.

Set in Singapore in 2008, amid a booming economy and intense demand for land, the young, the old—and the dead—are forced to jostle for a space to call their own. A property developer’s mother refuses to move from the family home to make way for his lucrative apartment block, while a psychic civil servant charged with relocating a cemetery encounters the most stubborn corpse yet.

Boom was created by Singapore Repertory Theatre in 2008 and developed through the Royal Court Theatre’s International Programme in London.

wAve was created and toured alongside Boom for Yellow Earth’s Autumn 2009 Tour.

Loosely inspired by the Medea myth and featuring a chorus of comic characters, wAve is a dysfunctional love story that veers from madcap farce to tragedy, as an isolated Korean immigrant’s dream of a perfect life as an American housewife turns sour.

A passionate and satirical play exploring the collision of cultures, wAve was commissioned by Center Theater Group / Mark Taper Forum’s Asian Theater Project and premiered at Ma-Yi Theater Company.
